How Does Invisalign Work?

If you have been considering Invisalign for a while, then you probably understand that this treatment involves a set of clear aligning trays. To help you get to know more about Invisalign and feel confident in your decision, here is an outline of the entire treatment process.

Step 1. Orthodontic Consult

At Alpers Dental, one of our dentists will assess your teeth, jaw and other facial structures to determine if Invisalign can help meet your needs and expectations. We will take images, moulds and X-rays, and put them through a scanner to create an accurate 3-D image of your smile. This appointment is where you should ask all your questions about Invisalign.

Step 2. Your Customised Treatment Plan

Based on the images and data, Invisalign technicians create a customised treatment for your unique malocclusion. They will map out the precise movements of your teeth over the course of treatment. Customised software simulates these movements and we make modifications if necessary and approves the fabrication of the aligners. Through Invisalign, you know the exact process over the course of your treatment as well as what the end result will look like. Up front you will also know how long treatment will take, how often you will switch your aligners and when you will need to check back with us for an evaluation.

Step 3. Your Customised Aligners are Ready

Invisalign will manufacture your custom-built aligners and ship them to Alpers where they will be ready and waiting. You come in to pick them up and we will give you a review of your instructions. Then you can get started!

Step 4. Follow the Plan

Usually, patients will switch out their aligners every two weeks for the next in the series. Little by little, your teeth will move into proper position. Week by week, you will begin to see changes in your smile as your teeth straighten. You will have follow-up appointments with us every 4 -6 weeks to track your progress and make sure things are moving along as they should. If you ever have any questions about your progress or your aligners, do not hesitate to call.

Step 5. Mission Complete

Usually, treatment will take anywhere from 9 to 15 months, or longer depending on the severity of your case. Once the procedure is completed, you will likely need retainers to help stabilise and maintain your new and improved smile.

The Limitations

Unlike braces, Invisalign is not meant for cases of moderate to severe cases of malocclusion, especially if there is simply not enough room for straight teeth. We may also partner this treatment with other methods to ensure you get the results you seek. For example, aligners cannot apply the necessary force to correct rotated teeth. Sometimes, he will apply bonding material to the tooth that acts like a handle. Lastly, this orthodontic treatment is comparatively expensive, especially because there is an up-front fee to make the aligners. Be sure to consider every option before settling for an orthodontic treatment of any kind. That way, you can work with us, and find the best solution for your needs.
