Tooth Fillings in Epsom

Tooth fillings are a simple restoration procedure method that can restore material lost to cavities or other mild decay and deterioration. Fillings are perhaps the most common dental procedure besides regular cleanings and issues with fillings holding are very uncommon. At Alpers Dental, we offer composite and ceramic fillings. Which type we use depends on your needs, but we offer these two options because they are tooth-coloured and have a more natural appearance.

  • How do dental fillings for cavities work?

The procedure for dental fillings involve removing the decayed tooth material, cleaning the affected area, and then filling the cavity with a material that hardens in place. This restores the tooth’s structure and prevents further decay by sealing off any cracks or spaces where bacteria can enter.

  • What types of fillings are there?

There are several types of fillings available, each with its advantages. Common materials include amalgam (silver fillings), composite resins (tooth-colored fillings), porcelain, and gold. Each material differs in durability, aesthetic finish, and cost, allowing us to tailor the filling to your specific situation and preference.

At Alpers Dental we only offer tooth-colored fillings (composite or porcelain) so you can restore you smile while keeping your tooth’s appearance looking its best.

  • Is tooth sensitivity after a filling normal?

Yes, experiencing tooth sensitivity after receiving a filling is normal and typically temporary. Sensitivity usually occurs as the tooth adjusts to the new filling material but should subside within a few days to a couple of weeks. If sensitivity persists or worsens, it’s important to contact our office for a follow-up.

    How To Minimize Tooth Sensitivity

To alleviate sensitivity in your teeth and gums, consider the following steps:

    • Rinse your mouth with a solution of warm water mixed with 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon of salt to help reduce inflammation.
    • Avoid hot, cold, or acidic foods and beverages temporarily.
    • Practice gentle brushing and flossing techniques.
    • Switch to a desensitizing toothpaste, such as Sensodyne or Colgate Sensitive.
